Southampton was an early user of the SCOOT system. SCOOT is now a key component of the traffic management schemes in Southampton and both Bus Priority and Gating are utilised.

The ASTRID database system and INGRID incident system were also deployed and provide traffic data for the ROMANSE Travel and Traffic Information Centre.

Hampshire County Council commissioned the Transportation Research Group (TRG) of the University of Southampton to carry out an assessment of SCOOT in the Portswood/St. Denys area in 1984/1985.
